A knowledgeable floor salesperson in a specialty store — fishing gear, bridal gowns, high-end audio — reads what a hesitant customer actually wants versus what they say they want, and guides them to a purchase they'll be satisfied with. Physically demonstrating a product, letting a customer try on ten pairs of shoes while making conversation, and handling a return from an irate customer who wants to speak to a human all require a body in the store. Preventing shoplifting through physical presence and situational awareness on the floor is a deterrent function that cameras alone don't replicate.
